This publication was updated in 2022 and is now a 256 page guide.  It is different from our larger guides in that it is intended to be a driving guide only and does not include photographs, quotes from emigrant diaries and other information that is included in our main guides.  This guide has been expanded to include the Bidwell/Bartleson packing party of 1841 where they continued west after abandoning their remaining wagons.  The Fremont, Talbot & Walker pack trail was used to go west in 1845.  Early in 1846 Hastings & Clyman used it to go east and later that year was used by Bryant, Russell and Hudspeth to go west.

The historic Hastings Cutoff is still visible in many locations and can be driven over and/or hiked on. This distinctive feature allows the modern day user to visualize what emigrants experienced as they travelled over the trail.

This guide will allow you to follow the Trail from its beginning at Fort Bridger, Wyoming to the Humboldt River west of Elko,  Nevada. There are detailed maps, complete driving directions to each marker, GPS latitude/longitude and UTM coordinates for each marker, and a brief history of the trail you will be driving on.
